Course Purpose
The TLEQ Level 2 Swim Teaching Qualification is designed to provide learners with the skills and knowledge to teach swimming, supporting participants from the age of three upwards to learn essential swimming skills and develop competence across all four strokes. It equips learners to plan, deliver, and evaluate inclusive, safe, and progressive swimming lessons suitable for participants of various abilities.
Once you have completed the TLEQ Level 2 Swimming Teacher Course you will be able to effectively plan, prepare, deliver and evaluate swimming lessons independently. It also gives you the skills and confidence to provide quality, inclusive and fun swimming lessons.

The TLEQ Level 2 Teaching Swimming qualification is a stand-alone award that allows you to plan, prepare, deliver, and evaluate swimming lessons independently. Unlike other pathways, you don’t need to complete a Level 1 first - the course is open to those with no previous experience, anyone holding a Level 1 Swimming Assistant (Teaching), or candidates with other aquatics qualifications.
It equips you with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to deliver safe, inclusive, and enjoyable lessons, making it an accessible route into teaching swimming for a wide range of learners.
The TLEQ Level 2 Teaching Swimming qualification is designed for anyone who wants to become a fully qualified swimming teacher. It is open to those with no previous experience, candidates progressing from a Level 1, or individuals with other aquatic qualifications. This course is ideal for teaching both children and adults and equips you with the essential skills, knowledge, and confidence to deliver safe, inclusive, and engaging lessons to swimmers of all ages and abilities.
To enroll in this course, you must be at least 16 years of age at the time of assessment.
During the course, you will learn a wide range of essential skills and knowledge to become a competent swimming teacher. This includes understanding the roles and responsibilities of a swimming teacher, as well as how to plan and deliver inclusive swimming lessons tailored to different ability groups.
You’ll explore the scientific principles that influence swimmers’ performance and development, and learn how to assess participants’ abilities and track their progress effectively. The course also focuses on developing core aquatic skills and refining swimming strokes, alongside enhancing your communication abilities and lesson management techniques. Additionally, you will be guided on how to evaluate your own teaching performance and plan for ongoing professional development.
The TLEQ Swim Teacher Level 2 is assessed through a variety of methods designed to evaluate both your theoretical understanding and practical teaching skills. These include answering theoretical questions, creating detailed lesson overviews and plans, and participating in practical lesson observations where your teaching will be assessed in real-time.
You will also complete a self-evaluation to reflect on your performance, along with a professional development plan outlining your goals and areas for improvement. The qualification is not graded; instead, you will either pass or fail based on whether you meet all of the specified assessment criteria.
The total the Swim Teacher Level 2 course time is approximately 90 hours, made up of 60 hours of guided learning and 30 hours of self-led study.
